Country chest of drawers with shaker-like simplicity and wonderful, Robin’s egg blue paint. Made circa 1830-1860, the white pine planks are unusually thick and sturdy on both the interior structure of the drawers and the runners, which allows them to function smoothly. The drawers are very solid, hand-dovetailed in the front and cut nailed in the back, where the wood is even thicker, which is highly unusual. The remainder of the construction is of cut nails.
Found in Indiana, the color is arguably as good as it gets within this genre of rural-made furniture. The profile is unusually tall and deep, with 16 ¼” – 16 ¾” wide planks on the top and sides. The pit-sawn, 2-board, mortise-and-tenon back is terrific. Here the largest plank is 19 ½”. Originally unpainted, the blue surface is none-the-less early, probably dating ca 1880 -1890. The dark mushroom knobs have beautiful form, provide great contrast, and are mid-19th century. These appear to be original, or at least dating to the application of the paint, as evidenced by the lack of oxidation underneath and the lack of any other marks from smaller knobs.
Condition: Minor to moderate paint loss from regular use. Small chips and wear, but nothing of significance for a country chest. |
