CARVED WALNUT, CIVIL WAR PERIOD LETTER OPENER WITH HEAD OF EAGLE:
Expert carving, attractive, hand-smoothed patina and excellent condition are three notable attributes of this Civil War era letter opener. Hand-carved of walnut, the handle is shaped in the form of an eagle. It's very fine, lightweight form makes one wonder how such a delicate item survived from the Civil War period (1861-65) in which it was made until the present day. Obviously well-cared for, it exists as an interesting relic of the war. Possibly of Pennsylvania origin. |
