Description:
In the wake of the 1876 centennial of our nation’s independence, with adult heads-of-households who had experienced the Civil War, American design of the late 19th and the early 20th centuries saw an influx of elements that brought recognition to America’s past. Namely predominated by high style, decorative objects of Dutch and English taste, with a tinge of patriotic fervor, this carved, wooden, spread-winged eagle, of monumental proportions, is a byproduct of that era.

With a wingspan of approximately 7 ¾ feet in length, by 3 feet in elevation, and a depth of just over 9 inches, the graphic impact of the carving definitely commands attention. Probably of American origin, made circa 1885-1920’s, though the elements are devoid of any sort of federal shield, arrows, olive branches, or Latin motto’d streamer, the overall appearance nonetheless displays more of an American air than its European counterparts. The leaves depicted in the crossed branches, gripped in both talons, are almost certainly laurel leaves. Found in Southern Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, the precise carver or place of manufacture remains unknown. The bold style and detail, in the development of the carving, is exceptional, however, as-is the presence of the bird when hung high on a wall. Perfect for over a large, early American flag, or anywhere, really, the quality and scale of the carving are such that there are very few comparables.

Condition: Previous touch-ups with gold paint were removed. These areas were touched up, as sparingly as possible, with a very light varnish, sparingly added as need be. Simply beautiful.
