American Backgammon and checkerboard, made of pine, with mortised, breadboard ends. Painted in five colors on each side, the one with backgammon has an unusual, pumpkin orange ground, bordered in black, with a decorative edge on the long sides. The pips, in black and scarlet red, are bordered in cream yellow pinstripes. A repeating register, in olive green with black stars, like the rowels of a spur, also bordered in yellow, separates each of the regions. In the center, in black and olive, is a bold presentation of fanciful scrollwork. Twenty-two brass studs, in two different styles, decorate the perimeter, with twelve on this side and ten on the reverse. The checkerboard side includes the same colors, minus the pumpkin orange. A teal green was added in the border of the grid, which has decorative, yellow and black corners, and yellow striping, to delineate and decorate the red and black spaces. The most notable feature occurs in the olive border, with has black arrows, embellished with more decorative work, yellow striping and shading.
Condition: Minor scratching and wear on the backgammon side, with one small chip in the center register. More significant of the same on the lesser, checkerboard side. |
