"BUY AMERICAN GOODS", PENNANT ON SAILCLOTH CANVAS, 1940-50:
This unusual, oversized pennant, embroidered with royal blue floss on a canvas sailcloth ground, is the only one of its kind that I have encountered. The patriotic theme is unusual. Both it and the construction suggest WWII manufacture, as the nation dug in its heals and prepared for prolonged shortages and sacrifice. While Naturalized American labor had been a politically-fueled battle cry since the 1840's, the concept of the heightened importance to buy American products found its genesis during the Second World War.
Mounting: The banner has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton twill, black in color, which was washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount was then placed in a modern, black-painted and gilded molding. The glazing is U.V. protective plexiglass.
Condition: There is minor soiling from obvious use, but there are no serious condition issues. |
