BLUE PAINTED WALL CUPBOARD WITH ARCHITECTURAL DOOR, ILLINOIS OR INDIANA, 1850-1880:
This interesting wall cupboard, with its unusual, arched, architectural door, exaggerated cornice molding, and beautifully scalloped feet, retains an early coat of ink blue paint. The surface is particularly intriguing, bubbled and crackled with great texture and very attractive. The interior has nicely spaced shelves, good for a multitude of uses.
The door has recessed panels, chamfered on the inside. The sides are plank with scalloped cutouts. On the back, in black painted letters, is the name of a town that might read "Francesville, Ind." or "Evansville, Ill." In either event, the cupboard does have a mid-western feel with Swiss immigrant or French Canadian influence. It survives as great folk example in the most desirable paint color for country American furniture, made ca 1850-1880.
Condition: One side repainted. Some nails added. Minor losses and expected wear. |
