YORK COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA BLANKET CHEST WITH RED AND BLACK STYLIZED DECORATION ON BLACK FEET, ca 1835
Dimensions (inches): 24.25" tall x 50.5" wide x 21.5" deep
Description:
York County, Pennsylvania blanket, made ca chest with an applied bracket base that has high scalloped feet. The case is painted a strong red that was then decorated with wide, flowing brush strokes of black with stylized black graining. The base is black and there is black along the edge of the lid, which is nicely molded. Inside there are cast iron butt hinges and a till with a molded lid, under which lies a secret compartment.

The chest has a wide and somewhat lower stance than usual, which gives it both an interesting look and makes it ideal for service as a coffee table.

Condition: Nails were at one point added along the molding. The lock clasp is present, but was removed so that it would not lock if the key is lost. There is a repair to one of the back feet. There are other minor losses and imperfections, but the overall condition is excellent for the period.
