BLACK AND RED CHECKER BOARD WITH 4 LARGE RED HEARTS:
Hearts are an unusual element to see among the imagery painted on 19th century game boards. This homemade example was constructed circa 1840-50 and repainted in the 1870's-80's. At that time, the molded dividers for trays at the ends were removed so that four large hearts could be painted there instead. The paint surface is tremendous all over with wonder craquelure.
