BARBER POLE, SAVANNAH, GA, 1860-80, AMERICAN FOLK ART MASTERPIECE CARVING
Dimensions (inches): Sold
Description:
BARBER POLE, SAVANNAH, GA, 1860-80, AMERICAN FOLK ART MASTERPIECE CARVING:

One of the best American Barber Poles to ever surface, this masterpiece turned and carved wooden trade sign has 3 separate, spiraling, hand-carved shafts that only join one-another at the top and bottom, below and above the finials. The thick, over-painted surface has achieved a such an interesting texture from its many coats of red, white, and blue polychrome paint that it actually adds to the folk quality of the object. Heat of the sun likely caused the paint to shrink and grow, stretching it over the surface, creating wrinkles and wide craquelure, and dulling the gloss to a most agreeable satin surface.

This bold and substantial object is one of the finest pieces of utilitarian American artwork that I have ever had the privilege to own. Found in Savannah, Georgia and possibly made there. One other pole is known to exist in this style, possibly by the same carver, though it lacks the ball turnings at either end.

Condition: Minor paint loss professionally filled and repaired.
