Car badges were affixed to a bar in front of the grill, or sometimes even directly to the grill, of an antique automobile. Cast of heavy brass, this example has a circular shape that displays the message "Join the Drive," arched across the top, above "Votes for Women." Likely made ca 1905-1914, there are two holes on the integral rectangular tab, whereby the badge would be attached. This is typical of the form. The holes are ribbed, creating the same concept of a lock washer, so that the nut would be less likely to loosen as the car rumbled down the road. Early cars had little in the way of shocks and roads were generally bumpy and rutted.
An example of this badge was included in an online exhibition of the National Motor Museum Trust (Hampshire, United Kingdom) and can be seen in their lead image at https://nationalmotormuseum.org.uk/online-exhibitions/the-drive-for-change/.
A wonderful and very scarce relic of the Suffrage movement.
Mounting: The badge was mounted on a background of 100% hemp fabric. The mount was placed in a black-painted and hand-gilded Italian molding. A shadow box was created within the frame. The glazing is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: Untouched, with attractive tarnishing that shows its age. |
