ANTIQUE, BATWING, LEATHER CHAPS WITH GREAT PATINA AND “TEXAS” SPELLED OUT IN THE STUDS, circa 1915-1930
Dimensions (inches): Frame - 47.5" t x 57" w
Description:
Leather cowboy chaps, in an extra-wide, batwing style, with trios of leather-tied, brass conchos on each side of a belted and decoratively scalloped waistband, a nickel-plated buckle, and two interior pockets. Probably made sometime between roughly 1915 and the 1930’s, the outer and lower edges are decorated with brass studs, also then used to spell the word “Texas” vertically on each leg. The leather has great wear and a darkly patinated surface, as-do the studs. Nickel-plated clips were included to affix the leg bindings.

Though unsigned, I suspect these were from a major saddle-maker and are simply beautiful to behold.

Mounting: The chaps were mounted and framed within our own conservation department. The background is twill-woven, 100% hemp fabric, ivory in color. A shadowbox was constructed by adding a solid mahogany build-out to and excellent quality molding with a similar wood grain, a beveled outer edge, and a scooped interior. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic (Plexiglas).

Condition: There are no significant condition issues.
