ANTIQUE AMERICAN FLAG WITH 46 STARS, 1907-1912, OKLAHOMA STATEHOOD, SCATTERED STAR POSITIONING:
46 star American parade flag, printed on cotton. The stars are arranged in a rectilinear fashion, but vary in position on their vertical axis, which adds a nice degree of folk quality to the flag's design. Note how upper-most point of the stars in the top and bottom rows tilt towards 11:00, then the next two rows have stars with various orientations, while the two center rows have stars that vary point-up, point-down throughout, a characteristic that I term "dancing" or "tumbling".
The 46th state, Oklahoma, joined the Union on November 16th, 1907, during Teddy Roosevelt's presidency. Roosevelt had many friends in the Oklahoma Territory from his Rough Rider days, and pushed it through to statehood. The 46 star flag became official on July 4th, 1908 and remained so until July 3rd, 1912. Many 46 star flags were made earlier, however, in great anticipation of the future addition of the state, which had previously been appointed to Native Americans.
Mounting: The antique molding dates to the period between 1870 and 1890, has a deep cove profile, and retains its original varnished surface. The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton rag mat. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is U.V. protective.
Condition: There are very minor stains, but there are no serious condition issues. |
