Description: |
|
19th century American game board with parcheesi on the front and draughts on the reverse (similar to checkers, but with a larger grid). Made of a single, softwood plank, a simple, flat molding with rounded edges was applied to all four sides. The surface is beautifully polychrome-painted in scarlet red, garnet, forest green and navy blue. The track is incised, as is the center, which is comprised of opposing triangles. The green corners are decorated with open, red squares, flanked by moustache-like scrollwork. The entire color scheme is thoughtfully laid out and the presentation is particularly bold. The glossy varnish is lightly crazed, resulting in absolutely excellent early patina. The result is striking and this is a board to please any advanced collector.
Made ca 1870-80, probably in the shop of a professional sign painter or toy maker.
Condition: Minor, expected wear. |
