AMERICAN PARCHEESI BOARD WITH GREAT POLYCHROME PAINTED SURFACE IN CRIMSON RED AND BLACK, CA 1870
Dimensions (inches): 15.5" x 15.5" x .75"
Description:
Painted 19th century American game board with parcheesi on the front and checkers on the reverse. The surface is satin polychrome in crimson red and black. Though the combination is two color and simple, the contrast of the particular shades, augmented by the depth of the black, is outstanding. Simple can be boring, but not in this case. Here the simplicity is part of what makes it so great and the patina from the vantage point of a connoisseur of early paint is a "10." The result is surprisingly striking and this is just one of those boards that draws you in.

Made ca 1870 of a single three-quarter-inch plank of poplar or perhaps cherry, the feel is of hardwood and the weight is heavier than expected. A five-sixteenths-inch spline was mortised into the top and bottom to prevent warping as part of its original construction, which has contributed effectively to its long-term stability.

Condition: Minor, expected wear.
