AMERICAN FOLK PAINTING OF A GUN DOG WITH A PHEASANT, 1840-70:
American oil painting on tin of a pointer holding a pheasant in its jowls, with attractive colors and presence. Found in Pennsylvania and dating between 1840 and 1870, note the interesting treatment of the dog's musculature. The surface of both the work and frame have fine and appealing craquelure.
The paint-decorated frame, in black with grey squiggles and with darkened varnish over a gilded inner lip, is period to the work or prior (1830-1860). The frame and the painting complement each other exceptionally well.
A great addition to any folk art collection; not just another dog painting by any means.
Condition: Excellent overall. Tiny flecks revealing tin beneath were carefully retouched. Two very small spots of previous retouch, between the dog's back legs in the ground, were redone. Great condition for a 19th century painting on tin. |
