6-BOARD CHEST WITH WHIMSICAL GRAIN PAINT DECORATION, ca 1810-1850, FOUND ON NANTUCKET, MA:
This pine, New England, 6-board chest was made sometime during the first half of the 19th century. It has a dovetailed case, cast iron hinges, and whimsical, rust red paint-decoration on a mustard ground. Some of the ochre white undercoat shows through and the result is a very attractive patina.
Condition: Handles were present on the chest at one time, possibly added in the late 19th century. These had been removed by a previous owner. There were holes present from the necessary screws, which were filled and professionally blended with paint. |
