Description....:
49 STARS ON A LARGE SCALE PARADE FLAG, ALASKA STATEHOOD, 1959-1960:

49 star American national parade flag, printed on cotton. Sometimes called “hand-wavers”, parade flags were generally affixed to wooden staffs to be waved at parades or political events.

Many people don’t know that the 49 star flag was actually official for a period of one year. The 49th state, Alaska, entered the Union on January 3rd, 1959. The 49 star flag became official on July 4th of that year and remained so until July 3rd, 1960. Hawaii had actually gained statehood in the same year as Alaska, on August 21st, but the 50th star would not be added until the change of the official "flag year" on the following July 4th.

Mounting: The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton twill, black in color, which was washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount was then placed in a black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic.
