48 STARS, SILK, G.A.R. OVERPRINT WITH GILDING, U.S. GRANT POST, MAINE:
48 star silk American parade flag with very unusual GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) overprint. The designation reads: "In Memorium, U.S. Grant Post No. 143, G.A.R" in metallic gold characters with black highlights. Grant Post #143 was in Biddeford, Maine, York County. The silk fabric is very unusual for GAR post parade flags, but it is the 2-color overprinted lettering that is extremely rare. The fat, starfish-shaped stars are arranged in the official rectilinear pattern.
The 47th and 48th states, New Mexico and Arizona, were added on January 6th and February 14th, 1912.
Mounting: The price of the flag includes proper mounting. The flag has been stitched to 100% cotton and mounted over an acid-free strainer. For an additional charge it can be encased in an acrylic museum box that has a U.V. protective front.
Condition: Excellent. No significant condition issues. |
