48 STARS, MARKED "CITY OF NEW YORK", APPROX 6' x 10', A RARE EXAMPLE:
48 star American national flag with the official rectilinear configuration of stars. Stamped on the sleeve is "City of New York, 2x3". I have encountered only 3 examples with this NYC marking, each of them in a different size (one 2' x 3', one 3' x 5', and this 6' x 10' example).
The canton and stripes of the flag are machine-sewn of heavy cotton. The stars are also cotton and are double-appliqued with a zigzag machine stitch, common in the period of its making. There is a heavy canvas sleeve, through which a rope hoist was inserted and sewn in place.
The 48th state, Arizona, entered the Union in 1912. We had 48 states from that year until 1959. This flag probably dates between 1940 and 1959.
Mounting: The flag has not yet been pressed or mounted. For $250, a cotton or wool sleeve can be hand-sewn to the reverse of the flag, through which a metal rod can be inserted for hanging. Alternatively, the flag could also be conserved and framed in a traditional molding.
Condition: Excellent. This is a sturdy flag with no holes. There is only a small amount of foxing at the fly end, evidently gained during its careful term of use. It was certainly flown in the city, probably outdoors, and seems to have been respectfully taken inside nightly. |
