48 STARS, CROCHETED, WWI - WWI ERA, A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE IN A SUBSTANTIAL, CIVIL WAR ERA, SOLID WALNUT FRAME:
Beginning around the turn of the century, it became popular to crochet early American flags. This one, with its 48 needlepoint stars, is of considerably better quality than some of its counterparts. It was probably made in the period between WWI (1917-1918) and WWII (1941-1945), and has a beautiful royal blue canton, brilliant scarlet red stripes, and a cotton sleeve along the hoist end.
The 48 star flag represents the addition of Arizona in 1912 and was the official star count from that year until 1959. It was the official flag through WWI, WWII, and the Korean Conflict.
Mounting: The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton rag mat and placed in a solid walnut frame, with a beautiful and slightly unusual profile, that dates to the period between 1860 and 1880. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective.
Condition: There is minor fabric loss along the sleeve, accompanied by moderate foxing throughout. The foxing gives the flag its beautiful, golden, oxidized color. |
