ELONGATED STERN BOARD EAGLE IN THE MANNER OF BELLAMY, WITH GILDED & PAINTED SURFACE, CA 1900:
Large stern board eagle, gilded and painted, carved in the manner of John Haley Bellamy. Made circa 1900, the work is of greater impact that the cookie-cutter style that is often seen and reproduced. Unlike many such eagles, which were reproduced in the mid-20th century, this one is earlier. Further, it is not a reproduction of one of Bellamy's birds, but rather of independent design, well-executed. It has elongated, outstretched wings and a large, shapely head. The carver obviously wished that the observer would view the eagle more head on, as apposed to across its breast, which is why the head and neck are unusually stout and rotund. This lends the carving a particularly strong level of folk quality.
Condition: Outstanding, without breaks; remarkable given the fragility of the wings. |
