46 STARS, 1907-1912, OKLAHOMA STATEHOOD, SCATTERED STAR POSITIONING:

46 star American parade flag, printed on cotton. The stars are arranged in a rectilinear fashion, but vary in position on their vertical axis. This adds substantial folk quality to the flag's design.

Oklahoma was the 46th state, joining the Union in 1907. The 46 star flag was official from 1908-1912, but many 46 star flags were made earlier in great anticipation of the future addition of the Oklahoma territory, which had previously been appointed to Native Americans by the U.S. Government. I have seen this exact type of 46 star silk flag with a hand-written, 1894 date, proving that this style was made much earlier than 1907.

Mounting: The flag has been hand-stitched to cotton rag mat and placed in a solid oak fame with an acid-washed surface that dates to the same era as the flag. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective.
