Description:
46 star American national parade flag, printed on plain weave cotton. The stars of the flag are configured in justified rows in counts of 8-7-8-8-7-8, but vary in position on their vertical axis. When viewed on the obverse (front), note how those in the top and bottom rows are canted, with one point directed in the 11:00 position. Moving toward the center, the stars in the next two rows are randomly oriented, displayed in a variety of positions, while those in the center two rows have stars that are consecutively point-down, point-up, throughout, which I something I term “tumbling” or “dancing.” Note how the above combination lends a strong degree of folk quality to the flag’s presentation. Also note the wide width of the bottom stripe, a trait common to this particular style. There are many types of parade flags in the 46 star count, among which this particular example is one of my personal favorites, both keenly attractive and extremely scarce.

Oklahoma joined the Union as the 46th state on November 16th, 1907, during Teddy Roosevelt’s presidency. Roosevelt had many friends in the Oklahoma Territory, from his Rough Rider days, and played a role in its achievement of statehood. The 46 star flag became official on July 4th, 1908 and remained so until July 3rd, 1912. Many 46 star flags were made earlier, however, in great anticipation of the addition of the state, that had been previously appointed to Native Americans. Due in part to the world tour of Roosevelt’s “Great White Fleet” (launched 1907), this was an extremely patriotic period.

Mounting: The flag was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, led by expert, trained staff. We take great care in the mounting and presentation of flags and have preserved thousands of examples.

The background is 100% cotton twill, black in color, that has been washed and treated for colorfastness. The mount was placed in a two-part frame that consists of a leather-wrapped liner with an ogee profile, to which a black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed, Italian molding, was added as a cap. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is U.V. protective.

Condition: There is extremely minor soiling, but the overall condition is excellent.
