44 STARS, 1890-1896, WYOMING STATEHOOD, A VERY SCARCE VARIETY WITH A RECTILINEAL STAR PATTERN THAT IS NOTCHED IN ALL FOUR CORNERS:
44 star American parade flag, bock-printed on coarse, glazed cotton. The strength of the colors is particularly keen in this example and lends a great deal to its presentation. The stars are arranged in a notched pattern, whereby spaces are left open in each of the four corners to allow the easy addition of the Western Territories that had yet to be added (Utah, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona). The choice to arrange the stars in this fashion adds both visual and historical interest, reflecting the demands placed on flag-makers during expansionist America, as well as their knowledge of and sensitivity to the remaining territories.
The 44th state, Wyoming, gained statehood on July 10th, 1890. Many flag makers would have began to add a 44th star to their flags on or before that day, and the 44 star flag would have generally seen use until the addition of Utah in 1896.
Mounting: Then flag has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color. The fabric was washed to remove excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The flag was then placed in a black painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic.
Condition: There is moderate soling along the hoist, adjacent to where the flag's original split wooden staff covered the extreme end. There is minor dye loss and misprinting. The flag presents beautifully. Many of my clients prefer early flags to show their age and history of use. |
