VERY RARE 36 STAR PARADE FLAG WITH MEDALLION CONFIGURATION AND 2 STARS IN EACH CORNER, EX-RICHARD PIERCE COLLECTION:

36 star American national parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton, with an extremely rare form of medallion star configuration that has two flanking stars in each corner instead of one. I can think of only one other variety of printed flag that shares this trait. The 36th state, Nevada, entered the Union during the Civil War on October 31st, 1864. The last Confederate general surrendered on May 26th, 1865. The 36 star flag became official on July 4th of that year, but makers of printed parade flags would have begun adding a 36th star to their flags in 1864, possibly even before the addition of the new state occurred. Such earnest anticipation became typical of flag-makers in the second half of the 19th century and reflected their hopes of elevating the sales of new flags. Lincoln pushed Nevada through just eight days before the November election because while the population of the state was quite small, its primary industry was silver mining and the political alignment was generally Republican. The 36 star flag was replaced by the 37 star flag in 1867, with the addition of Nebraska.

Provenance: Ex-Richard Pierce.

Mounting: The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton rag mat and placed in a paint-decorated and gilded molding that dates to the period between 1840 and 1870. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is U.V. protective.

Condition: There is some fading and bleeding, but the rarity warrants almost any condition.
