Due to its wealth in silver and increased support of the Republican, anti-slavery ticket, Lincoln pushed Nevada through to statehood on October 31st, 1864, during the Civil War and just 8 days before the November election. This 36 star, merino wool flag displays a highly unusual, widely-spaced, double-wreath of stars around a single, center star, with a trio of stars in each corner. Accompanying the flag is a 6-star commission or “homeward bound” pennant, flown at the topmast of a ship, made of the same fine fabrics. Provenance: Exhibited from June 12th – September 6th, 2021 at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, in an exhibit entitled “Flags & Founding Documents.” The flag portion of this, curated by Jeff Bridgman, featured 43 flags that span American history as we progressed from 13 to 50 stars, with a particular focus on not only flags that display the anticipated and/or actual addition of states, but the subtraction of both Union and Slave States during the Antebellum and the Civil War periods. Circa 1864-1867 Merino wool with cotton stars, linen or hemp hoist binding. |
