Description....:
A series of 34 star paper parade flags, like this one, was made in mourning of Lincoln's death, probably between 1865 and 66. Other examples I have seen have had extra white paper to the left of the canton, which was folded over and glued, acting as a sleeve through which a wooden or metal hat pin stick was previously fitted. This one does not have such a sleeve, but it is none-the-less one of this same series, which would have been cut from a sheet by its owner. Each paper mourning flag I have seen has had a different star configuration, set upon a black canton. The others have had words in the stripe area, such as "Our Chief has Fallen", and one had writing in the canton. But this flag contains an oval portrait of the President in the stripe area. This is a rare little flag with great historical context. It is currently unframed. Condition: There is a 1/2" tear at the hoist end runnung through the pole and into the 6th red stripe. There is a fold running from the fly end at the 2nd red stripe, diagonally backwards ending 1" from the fly end long the bottom of the paper. These are basically inconsequential and are not visible except on close inspection.
