13 STARS, RARE OVAL MEDALLION DESIGN, MADE FOR THE 1876 CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION:
13 star parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton, made to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of our nation's independence in 1876. The wreath pattern canton, with a large center star and 4 flanking corner stars, was a popular design during the centennial celebration. Note how the wreath of this particular flag has a somewhat more oval shape. This is the only 13 star parade flag variety I know of that bears this trait. While seemingly small, this is also one of the larger parade flag examples with 13 stars that were made during the 19th century.
Mounting: The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton rag mat and placed in an unusual, red-painted molding that dates to the mid 19th century. A piece of black silk organza was placed behind the flag to strengthen its color against the ivory background. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective. |
