13 STARS, CIVIL WAR PERIOD OR PRIOR,
A WHIMSICAL PRESENTATION OF THE 4-5-4 PATTERN:
This 13 star American national flag was made sometime between the mid-1850's and the American Civil War (1861-1865), probably the latter of these periods. This is one of the most pleasingly visual of the flags I have had in what was intended to be a 4-5-4 configuration. But the haphazard center row of double-appliqued stars dips down in the center to create an unintended presentation of great folk quality. Aiding the effect is the second star in the top row, which, unlike the others, tips to the left and also falls below the site line.
The stars are sewn by hand on a two-Piece canton of blue wool bunting. The 13 wool bunting stripes are treadle-sewn, as is the beautiful, brown linen sleeve, which has 2 brass grommets.
This outstanding example is (arguably) the nicest 4-5-4 pattern flag I have ever owned. It is likely that it was made by the U.S. Navy for use as a small boat ensign, though this type of star placement isn't commonly seen on Navy flags. The stars may point in various directions, but their line is typically quite straight. The Navy used 13 star flags on small boats until 1916. |
