46 STARS, OKLAHOMA STATEHOOD, 1907-1912:

46 star American national flag. Represents the addition of Oklahoma in 1907 and official from 1908 to 1912.

The canton and stripes of the flag are constructed of machine-sewn wool bunting. At the top and bottom of hoist end, the same bunting was used to make triangular reinforcements called gussets. These are original to the flag. There is a twill cotton sleeve with two brass grommets. The stars, which all point upward, are double appliqued, made of cotton muslin, and machine-sewn with a lineal stitch. This type of stitching is quite unusual during the 46 star period, when the zigzag machine stitch prevailed as far and away the most common method of appliqueing stars. Lineal stitching is almost always more attractive because it is finer and has an appearance that is more homemade, less industrial. Since almost all 46 star flags with sewn construction have zigzag sewn stars, the lineal applique stitching is a particularly nice feature.

Mounting: The flag has been mounted over a stretcher frame with approximately 3" of black background showing on all sides. It can be hung this way, without a frame, or placed behind u.v. plexiglas in a traditional molding.

The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% silk organza on every seam for support. It was then hand-sewn to a 100% cotton background, black in color. The black fabric was washed to remove excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount was then placed on supportive materials over a wooden strainer.
