Description: |
|
Early preserve cupboard, found in Maine, with two-paneled doors and exceptional, red-painted surface, with wonderful patina. Made of pine, note the unusual layout of the panels, the lower of which spans most of the distance, in a vertical format, crowned by another that is horizontal and narrow. There is an arrow-shaped spinner at the top, a mushroom knob, affixed with a threaded, wooden dowel, and cast iron butt hinges. All of the construction is by cut nails, including the 4-board back. The interior has 2 shelves and is painted deep red. There is a make-do, tin repair to the lower center of the doors, at the base, applied with square tacks.
Condition: There may have once been a second backing of tin, cloth, or wood, applied with small finishing nails or tacks. The make-do repair covers early mouse holes and there are two other in the back. |
