Description....:
Numerous inter-urban trolley lines were present in New Jersey at the height of the Suffrage movement. This terrific poster is of the sort used for promotion in trolleys, much like what we are familiar with today on subway lines. Sporting the traditional, American Suffragette color of cheddar yellow, with black text on a white ground, the verbiage is among the most compelling of any I have seen across all graphic Votes for Women objects:

You ask us to walk with you,
Dance with you, marry you;
Why don't you ask us to
Vote with you?

Images of six women in period dress appear along the upper register. Printed in New York, and with the Union Bee of the Allied Printing Trades Council of New York City, the poster was created for the Co-Operative Committee of Suffrage Organization, 56 N. Maple St., East Orange, NJ. This would have been a consortium of Suffrage groups.

1915 was a year of much anticipation in New Jersey. On October 18th of that year, male voters defeated a referendum that would have given all women of the state the right to vote. New Jersey was among four eastern states where the issue came to a vote, including New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Although unsuccessful in all four, individual organizations within the movement, many of which had largely acted independently, and/or were populated largely by members of high society, recognized the need to combine forces, as well as to recruit greater numbers of working women. As men left for WWI (U.S. involvement 1917-18), the value of women in the workforce and at home was felt in even greater measure, which probably turned the tide.

Thus far undocumented in any text on the subject, this is one of just two examples of this poster that I have encountered in the marketplace. The only other had substantial damage, with a large chunk of the broken off and absent, including a portion of the text.

Mounting: The poster was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. The background is 100% cotton twill, black in color. The mount was then placed in a modern frame with a finish that is very dark brown, nearly black, with red with a red undertone and highlights, to which a black-painted and hand-gilded Italian molding was added as a liner. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic. Feel free to contact us for more details.

Condition: There is minor foxing.
