Description....:
38 star paper parade flag made by the Dennison company. Has an overprinted menu for the Turks' Head Inn restaurant in Rockport, MA (North Shore, above Boston), and is date August 15th, 1890. Overprinted text such as this is extremely rare in surviving examples and is highly sought after by advanced collectors. Menu items such as "Roast Leg of Mutton" and "Mineral Waters" significantly impact the folk qualities of the flag. The flag has 38 stars with what I refer to as a "notched in all 4 corners" row configuration. 4 empty spaces are left open with obvious anticipation that the Dakotas, Montana, and Washington State would soon join the Union. It's interesting to note that the August 1890 date is 10 months after the 38 star flag period. It is reasonable to assume that Dennison had this design available and simply used it, saving money for the client by avoiding a new print layout for the flag itself. The flags may have, in fact, already been printed, but were run through the press again to add menus. With the exception of the star configuration and the overprinted menu, the flag is exactly like other crepe paper parade flags we have seen made by Dennison. The Dennison name below the canton is consistent with other paper parade flags we have handled. Mounting: The flag has been mounted in an archival manner and placed in a gold gilt frame of the 1880-1920 period. Condition: There are no significant condition issues.
