OCEAN WAVES PATTERN MENNONITE CRIB QUILT, MADE OF WHITE CALICO SHIRTING AND TURKEY RED COTTON, PENNSYLVANIA OR NEW YORK STATE ORIGIN, circa 1880-1890’s
Dimensions (inches): 39.5" x 39.5" x 1.5"
Description:
“Ocean waves” pattern quilt, made of Turkey red cotton and white calico shirting, made between 1880 and the 1890’s. Note how the blocks in one corner incorporate a different calico fabric than the remainder. This is a purposeful “error” and a typical Mennonite trait, illustrating the concept: “No one is perfect but God.” This can be seen in many Pennsylvania Mennonite quilts and probably spills over into those of other states. This particular example is either of Pennsylvania or New York origin. Entirely hand-sewn and hand-quilted, there is a narrow blue cotton binding and a beautiful back made of different calico fabric. The quilting is traditional in terms of the various styles used and is beautifully accomplished.

Mounting: The quilt was professionally mounted by us in-house. We take great care in the mounting and preservation of flags and related textiles and have preserved thousands of examples. For 25 years we have maintained our own textile conservation department, led by a master’s degree level graduate from one of the nation’s top programs.

The quilt was stitch-mounted to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color, that has been washed and treated for colorfastness. A custom wooden framework was created for support, and the background fabric was wrapped around it, so that there is an overall depth of approximately 1.5” with the rug. This is thicker than usual and results in a more pronounced presentation.

Condition: There is minor to modest overall fading and there are a few very minor stains in the red fabric. The quilt presents beautifully.
