PATRIOTIC RIBBON WITH 13 STAR FLAG IN THE 3-2-3-2-3 PATTERN, 1865-1890:

13 star American national flag ribbon, printed on silk, of the type used for military, political and fraternal badges in the period between 1865 and 1900. The stars are arranged The stars are arranged in staggered rows of 3-2-3-2-, which is the most common configuration found on 19th century flags with 13 stars. This creates a secondary pattern that forms a diamond of stars with a star in each corner. It also mimics the St. Andrews and St. Georges' crosses found on the British Union Jack.

This sort of example would typically have been overprinted with some sort of text to advertise an organization, reunion, the campaign of political candidate(s), or an event. The absence of text or images, if less desirable, is actually somewhat unusual. The fine blue border surrounding the image adds nicely to the presentation.

Mounting: The gold painted molding has attractive, early surface and dates to the period between 1860 and 1880. The ribbon has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton hemp fabric. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is U.V. protective.
