EXTREMELY RARE WEFTWORK BEDSPREAD, MID-19TH CENTURY
Dimensions (inches): 66" w x 81.5" h
Description:
EXTREMELY RARE WEFTWORK BEDSPREAD, MID-19TH CENTURY:

This highly unusual textile is executed in a style called weftwork. Made of cotton and wool, it dates to the mid-19th century. While there is at least one known maker of weftwork bedspreads in America, a woman in New Hampshire, her bedspreads appear only in blue on white. Ones like this, which appear in a combination of forest green, midnight blue and red, are generally thought to be Canadian. Some suggest that the same work was also done in Maine, but whatever the case may be, the workmanship and texture, the graphics and colors are all spectacular and certain epitomize all that collectors love about Americana. The background is homespun and the stitchery itself looks a lit like candlewick. The feel is of linen and wool. The designs focus on northern elements. A cross-hatch and pine tree border surrounds a multi-sided medallion. Inside this are potted flowers and ferns that extend from each corner to the double-Lemoyne Star in the center.

Condition: Generally excellent. Minor foxing.
