RED, BLACK, AND OCHRE WHITE-PAINTED, FOLDING BACKGAMMON GAME BOARD WITH LEAF-LIKE MEDALLIONS, CIRCA 1870-1890
Dimensions (inches): 14.75" t x 16.25"w x 1.75" d
Description:
American Backgammon and checker board, made of softwood, with a case that is hand-dovetailed at one end and nailed at the other (untouched and entirely original), with recessed playing surfaces. Hinged so that it folds at the center, the backgammon side is painted in an appealing shade of red, with black and ochre white pips. These are numbered by hand-painting in beautiful, free-hand brush strokes of grey-green. In the center of the opposing sides are attractive, leaf-like medallions in the same white. The tiny hinges are made of brass.

The checkerboard is comprised of a dark, crimson red and olive grid, with a eucalyptus green border. The edges are paint-decorated to look like tiger maple.

Condition: Minor to modest paint loss and scuffing, with some discoloration from age and soot.
