Native American beadwork coin purse with wonderful colors and imagery, made ca 1910-1930, probably for the Civil War, Span-Am War, and/or WWI veteran’s market. Possibly of Plains origin, the obverse is a whimsical rendition of a federal shield with 37 randomly placed stars, represented by a combination of grey and white beads, with a complement of 21 pales (vertical stripes). The star and stripe counts in this case are merely decorative. The device is set on a beautiful background of sky blue, with the letters “USA” distributed above and to either side. The letters are rendered in metallic bronze colored beads and the perimeter of the purse is of the sale color. On the reverse, set upon a ground of deep blue with scattered green beads throughout, is a geometric image that might be intended to represent a steer, a Buffalo, or perhaps a dog. The latter is rendered in a combination of red, bronze, and sky blue. Made of hide, there is a zippered closure with a rawhide tie. The interior is lined with fabric that has a printed, floral pattern.
Mounting: The purse has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color, that was washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. The mount was then placed in a deep, shadowbox style molding with a step-down profile, dark brown in color, with red highlights and exposed wood grain, to which a gilded shadowbox molding was added as a liner. The glazing is crystal clear, anti-reflective, U.V. protective museum plexiglass. |
