PLAQUE WITH A PORTRAIT BUST OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, NEW YORK TERRACOTTA CO., 1887, MADE IN ANTICIPATION OF THE CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OF HIS 1889 INAUGURATION
Dimensions (inches): 24" tall x 19" wide x 4.5" deep
Description:
Oval terracotta plaque with a side-facing portrait of George Washington, made by the New York Architectural Terracotta Company, signed and dated “1887.” This was just prior to the 100-year anniversary of Washington’s inauguration [1889], which was widely celebrated. The extravagant fanfare was accompanied by a plethora of beautiful and interesting goods, produced to commemorate the father of our great nation.

This substantial casting bears a very pleasing likeness of Washington. At 2.5" thick around the perimeter and 4.5" in the center, it's good looks are accentuated by its depth, and the cupped relief from which the portrait image protrudes.

Condition: There are but minor losses. The plaque was at one point painted white. This was removed in order to return the plaque to its original state. A small amount of professional color restoration was undertaken to make the appearance more even.
