MAGIFICENT BLACK FOREST ANTLER GUN CABINET, LATE 19TH CENTURY
Dimensions (inches): Overall inc. antlers: 99.5" tall x 45" wide x 21.5" deep
Description:
Black Forest, German / Austrian, two-piece gun cabinet of the late 19th century. Made of black walnut, with a wonderfully dovetailed case, the top section has two arched, tombstone, glazed doors, followed by a base with two drawers over two doors. The top is crowned with one of the most startlingly beautiful arrangements of red and fallow deer antlers that I have ever seen on a piece of case furniture, with boars tusks in the front center.

The center of the crest rail, flanked by antlers, is decorated with a boar's head, expertly carved in deep relief from the base of an antler, just beyond the crown. Polished crowns punctuate points all over the case where two or more antlers join. Even the forked footings where the gun stocks rest inside the cabinet are antler. There are nickel-plated clasps for the barrels. The back isn't simple planks, but rather has deep, raised panels. It's expertly built and exceptionally sturdy.

The case was refinished at some point. The color of the wood is deep and rich. There are minor losses in the wild hog tusk and a couple of new nails were used strengthen the antlers.
