LARGE BAND OR PANTRY BOX WITH HAND-PAINTED FEDERAL EAGLE, CA 1810-1830
Dimensions (inches): 10.5" high x 17.25" wide x 16.25" deep
Description:
LARGE BAND OR PANTRY BOX WITH HAND-PAINTED FEDERAL EAGLE, CA 1810-1830:

Nearly round in shape and constructed of white pine, this large scale band or pantry box dates from the period between 1810 and 1830. The traditional lap construction is held intact with hand-cut nails and tacks. The shell is decorated with a hand-painted eagle in forest green and yellow. There is a shield upon its breast with 13 pales, and two peace branches are gripped in its talons. Serving like the escutcheon on a military drum, with pillars on either side made of hand-painted yellow flowers, the remainder of the body is hand-stenciled in green, using a diamond geometric around the top with a swag and bellflower pattern beneath.

The top of the lid is decorated in green using various flora and fauna stencils, while the applied lip features diagonal, diamond, and polka dot shapes, combined to form a repeating border.

The remainder of the exterior bears the original, untouched varnish. Both it and the painted surface are absolutely exceptional with light crazing throughout.

It is very unusual to encounter an eagle on an early American box with this manner of construction. Lacking any sort of residue from flour or other foodstuffs, one may surmise that it could have been made to hold other various dry goods, possibly a military hat or various effects for safekeeping. Whatever the case may be, the scale, presentation, early date and excellent surface make for a wonderful early American object.

Condition: There is modest varnish loss present on approximately 1/8 of the lid, perhaps from moisture. There are minor breaks and losses, but nothing unexpected or of great significance. The box is sturdy and in great condition for its early date.
