Description:
PAINT-DECORATED DRESSING TABLE FROM THE NEW PORTLAND AREA OF MAINE, WITH TWO LEAPING STAGS OR REINDEER, THE ONLY NEW ENGLAND DRESSING TABLE I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED WITH ANIMAL IMAGERY, CA 1830:

Made in the New Portland area of the State of Maine, in Franklin County, this 2-tier, paint-decorated, New England dressing table on turned, Sheraton legs is the only example I have ever encountered with animal imagery. Two leaping deer or Reindeer face a stylized tree in the center of the large single drawer, flanked by reeds or ferns in each corner. On the upper register are the matching pair of smaller drawers with compass-like, floral medallions and whimsical, scrolling tornados. The scalloped splash features a pair of Maple leaves and there is plenty of black pin striping to compliment and strengthen the monochromatic design on its white ground. The sandwich glass knobs are original.

Condition: The surface has been cleaned of its original varnish, which had darkened substantially with age. One of the small knobs broke and has been repaired. There is minor, expected wear throughout.
