Pair of cast iron fenders / carriage guides, used to steer carriages away from the corners of buildings. A highly unusual form, in the shape of horse hooves and forelegs, with angled lattice work behind. Bold and dramatic. Found in Pennsylvania and attributed to William Adams, Philadelphia.
Born in New Jersey in 1833, Adams married three times and by 1870 was living in Philadelphia with his second wife. He was an iron worker and by the 1880's-90's was partners in a business under the name Adams & Storrie Iron Foundry. In 1903 he incorporated a business under his own name. He appears in the 1900 and 1910 censuses as an iron worker. A very close variation on these fenders is known with a Wm. Adams Co. mark. These are unsigned and probably pre-date the incorporation. The black in-service paint has nice wear and oxidation.
Condition: Remarkable. Small chip from the very front of one hoof. |
