Description:
PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN WATERCOLOR OF A COLORFUL BIRD, TAKEN FROM AN 1821 MATHEMATICS COPYBOOK, LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:

Pennsylvania German pen & ink sketched watercolor of a bird, taken from an 1821 mathematics copybook. Like many hand-drawn images of this nature that often appear on fraktur (illuminated birth and marriage certificates and other various family records), the style is crude and whimsical and its colors are imaginative and fantasy-based as opposed to realistic.

The page, entitled "Compound Subtraction," is two-sided and the date of 1821 appears on the reverse. The copy book was found in Lancaster County and disassembled by an antiques dealer who subsequently owned it.

Condition: The work was clipped from a page in a journal. There is some foxing and some bleeding of ink on each side from the reverse. There are minor tears along the perimeter. The bottom edge was trimmed slightly.
