FOLK PAINTING OF A LARGE, BRICK CHURCH, PROBABLY OF NEW YORK STATE OR VERMONT ORIGIN, CA 1840-1870:
Folk painting of a large, brick church, probably of New York State or Vermont origin, ca 1840-1870. Executed in oil on canvas, the intense, tomato red color of the buildings and sidewalk, along with the shaped rooftops and the endearing, New England style houses are its strongest attributes. Note, in particular, the green-painted, louvered shutter surround on the front door of the house. A date plaque on the front of the church reads 1830. I suspect that the building behind the church is a school and that the residence belonged to the pastor.
An exceptional example of an American folk townscape in a mahogany veneered frame of the 1830-1860 period, with great, early surface.
