PAIR OF CA 1870 WATERCOLOR RENDITIONS OF VALLEY FORGE, PENNSYLVANIA DURING THE TIME OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR
Dimensions (inches):
Description:
PAIR OF CA 1870 WATERCOLOR RENDITIONS OF VALLEY FORGE, PENNSYLVANIA DURING THE TIME OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR: Executed in watercolor on paper, circa 1870, this pair of landscape paintings shows Valley Forge, Pennsylvania with its classic, stone houses and outbuildings and a full compliment of soldiers on all inbound roads. The paintings don't have the feel of more traditional military views; instead they depict rolling, snow-laden dells, tall pines, and men that seem to be in no great rush. Note the serenity that the watercolor medium and the painter's style adds to what could otherwise be a chaotic scene. The two works show the same location from two different vantage points, which is both unusual and intriguing. Mounting: Each is laid on archival materials and placed in paint-decorated and water-gilded moldings that date to the period between 1840 and 1870. Spacers keep the works away from the glass, which is u.v. protective.
