PAINT-DECORATED CORNER CUPBOARD, ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN RUPP, YORK COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, CA 1840-50
Dimensions (inches): The cupboard requires a 36" corner (36" of wall space on each side of the back). The height is 86" (7' 2").
Description:
Pennsylvania corner cupboard with two, glazed, eight-pane doors over two drawers and two paneled doors below. Made ca 1840-50, the paint-decorated surface in reds and browns is a stylized representation of fancy-grained mahogany, but with an exuberant folk art flare.

The maker and decorator was likely John Rupp (b. 1809, d. 1899), who worked in Hanover, Pennsylvania, York County. Rupp, a Pennsylvania German, is one of the most recognized names in rural Pennsylvania furniture. He is best known for this general style of paint decoration, in various forms and in these particular colors. He made everything from chairs, to beds, to desks, to chests of drawers, to large corner cupboards. Rupp was an interesting character. He left home (Maryland) at the age of 13 to seek employment. He tried leatherworking and then apprenticed as a cabinet-maker for a bit, then worked for the Railroad for a time before settling on cabinetry in 1833.

The painted exterior is original. It's a two-piece cupboard, made of poplar like most rural Pennsylvania furniture of the period. The back is beautifully hand-planed.

The cupboard requires a 36" corner (36" of wall space on each side of the back). The height is 86" (7' 2").

Condition: There are minor losses and expected wear. The porcelain knobs on the drawers are period replacements. The slide latches on the bottom doors were replaced by a previous owner.
