SMALL, TAPERED, FORKED TAIL SUFFRAGETTE PENNANT ON ITS ORIGINAL WOODEN STAFF WITH TEXT THAT READS "VOTES FOR WOMEN", CA 1910-1920:
Small, tapered, forked tail suffragette pennant on its original wooden staff. Made of cotton between 1910-1920, the printed black text that reads: "Votes for Women" on a yellow ground. Violet and yellow were the customary colors of the suffrage movement in America, though red, white and blue objects are also seen. Violet and green were the colors of the women's movement in England.
Suffragette banners and pennants are particularly scarce and sought-after. This one is firmly above average due to the graphic nature of the bold lettering that follows the slight taper of the perimeter as it advances from the hoist to the fly end.
Mounting: The solid walnut molding has ebonized trim and retains its original gilded liner with silhouetted decoration. Made between 1870 and 1880, it pre-dates the banner by approximately 30-40 years. The pennant has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% hemp fabric. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: There are no significant condition issues. |
