| "DEFEND THE FLAG" GAME BOARD, 1898:
This beautiful, lithographed paper game board was made in the great patriotism that surrounded the Spanish American War (1898), when Teddy Roosevelt and Admiral Dewey were the heros of the day. Along the perimeter are eagles, flags, and cannons with stacks of cannonballs, along with an 1898 patent date. In the center of the board is a grid of red, white, and blue spaces. The back is covered in glossy blue vellum with gilt embossing.
Mounting: 100% cotton rag mat was cut to fit around the board, which was placed over more archival materials. It was then placed in a hand-gilded and distressed, contemporary Italian molding with a black painted inner edge. The front is u.v. protective Plexiglas. |
