Description....:
CIVIL WAR PERIOD PATRIOTIC EAGLE BANNER, PAINTED on LINEN: Oil painted oil on fine linen, this patriotic banner with a center medallion eagle is the best of its kind that I have ever encountered. The shield on the breast has 13 stars, repeated above in the gold framed window of blue sky. Note how the shield takes up an unusually amount of space on the eagle's breast, making it look unusually broad and adding considerably to its strong folk quality. Note also that the arrows are grasped in the eagle's right talon, indicating that the nation was at war. The banner can thus be dated to either the Mexican (1846-48) or the Civil War (1861-65), probably the latter. It may have served as a window shade, yet I think it more likely that it was commissioned for the vestibule or hall of a federal building. While there are tears near the swag border and some craquelure throughout the paint, the overall condition is exceptional for a banner of this kind in my experience. There is no restoration whatsoever and the surface of the paint, lightly varnished, is outstanding. Mounting: The pennant has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton, black in color, which has been washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. A shadowbox was created to accommodate the wooden rod. The front is u.v. protective plexiglas.
